The 2008 Professional Footballer’s Association Player of the Year was awarded to Cristiano Ronaldo who plays for Manchester United. This is the second year in a row that Ronaldo has won the award. The only other player to win back to back awards was Thierry Henry of Arsenal from 2003-2004. Cristiano also won the 2008 Fan’s Player of the Year award, which is also the second year in a row that Ronaldo has won that award.

Did you know that Brazil has won the World Cup more times than any other country? Since 1930, Brazil has won the World Cup 5 times. Italy is close behind though, winning the tournament 4 times. Germany has won 3 times. Uruguay and Argentina have both won the World Cup twice, while England and France have both won once each.

Did you know that India withdrew from the 1950 World Cup tournament because FIFA would not allow the team to play barefoot? India had already qualified but refused to continue because they wanted to play barefoot! Uruguay ended up beating Brazil 2-1 to clinch the cup that year. Lucky for them, they felt comfortable playing in cleats!

As a coach, you are not only responsible for your players, but for their parents as well. Parents play a big role in a player’s soccer experience both on and off the field. It is important for you to discuss your goals with them, as well as set guidelines before the season begins. read more
