2009 ESPY Awards

The U.S. Men’s National Team was awarded the 2009 ESPY for “Best Upset” for their win against the Number 1 ranked Spain National Team in the semifinals of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.

The ESPY Awards is an annual sports awards event that was created and is broadcasted by ESPN. The award was given at the 17th annual awards ceremony in Los Angeles, California. The show will be televised on ESPN and ESPNHD on Sunday, July 19, at 9 p.m. EST.

The other nominees for the award were Mine That Bird, which won the Kentucky Derby as a 50-1 shot, Oregon State for beating then Number 1 ranked USC last fall and the Tampa Bay Rays for winning the American League Championship Series. The voting and decision for the Men’s National team was done through online polls.

It is the first ESPY for the U.S. Men’s Team, the Women won the Outstanding Team award in 2000 for winning the 1999 Women’s World Cup.

Landon Donovan also received an award, which was his second ESPY for Best MLS Player for his league leading 20-goal season with the Los Angeles Galaxy last year.
