Lionel Messi, the 22-year-old from Argentina, has been named FIFA’s 2009 World Player of the Year. The FIFA Player of the Year award is voted for by the coaches and captains of each national side. This was Messi’s first time winning the FIFA Player of the Year award, beating last year’s winner Cristiano Ronaldo, his two teammates Andres Iniesta and Xavi and Brazil midfielder Kaka.
