2009 Gold Cup: USA vs Haiti

Yesterday was a big soccer day for Sideline Soccer! We went to a triple header at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. After some great food and drinks from our tailgate party (thanks Charley!), we headed in for the first match between New England Revolution and Kansas City Wizards. Not much to report from that game except that it was a 0-0 tie with not much action at all.
On the other hand, the game between USA and Haiti was a great match to watch. USA got on board first with a 1-0 lead and kept that lead through the first half. At the start of the 2nd half however, Haiti came out strong and scored 2 goals within a span of 3 minutes. USA finally responded in extra time tying the game and that’s how it ended.
We ended up leaving after the 2nd match and didn’t watch Honduras vs Grenada, but the match ended with Honduras winning 4-0.

It was a great game… one of those that keep you on the edge of your seat. But I’d have to say that if the defense talked more with keeper Luis Robles and the team didn’t start the 2nd half so flat… they would have won! But it was Robles’ first game… so I guess we gotta give him that.
Now they go onto playing Panama Saturday night. Lets hope they get it together!

I’d have to say the biggest flaw (which resulted in goals) was the ball control (or lack thereof). The team that possessed the ball, gained all the momentum for that period of the game. For example, after Haiti scored their 2 goals the US tried to equalize it by sending numerous balls in from midfield or the corners. Essentially they were giving the ball away but then instead of carrying the ball out of their own zone, Haiti would just clear it back to midfield (i.e. back to the USA defenders). Once the US stopped with the aerial attack and started moving the ball on the ground, they were able to form 3 or 4 very strong attacks, one of which landed the equalizing goal.
