2009 MLS Season Kickoff

The 2009 MLS Season kicks off Thursday, March 19th with the 2008 MLS Cup finalists the New York Red Bulls playing the new Seattle Sounders at the XBOX Pitch at Qwest Field in Seattle. The season opener will be at 9pm (EST) and will be televised live on ESPN2.

For the 2009 season, there will be 15 teams which will each have 30 regular season games. The MLS Cup Playoffs, will begin on October 29th with the MLS Cup on November 22, which will also take place in Seattle. Seattle will be the eighth stadium to host the Cup also making it the first Cup to be played on turf. Eight teams from the two conferences will qualify for the tournament based on regular season records. The playoffs end with the championship game, the MLS Cup.
