2009 MLS Supporters’ Shield Award

2009 MLS Supporters’ Shield Award

The Columbus Crew was awarded the 2009 Major League Soccer Supporters’ Shield Award, which was the team’s second consecutive Supporters’ Shield. The Supporters’ Shield award is given to the MLS club with the best regular-season record, regardless of conference. The Crew finished the regular season with a record of 13-7-10 for 49 points and ended  first in the Eastern Conference and is guaranteed home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

2009 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year

Zach Thornton of Chivas USA has been awarded the 2009 Major League Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year Award. The award is given to the top goalkeeper in the MLS at the end of the regular season. Thornton had a career-best of 12 shutouts and 0.87 goals against average in 2009 leading his team to a 13-11-6 record. He led the League in goals against average, shutouts and ranked second in wins.
