The other nominees for the award were the Saints winning the Superbowl, Phil Mickelson winning the Masters, and Joannie Rochette’s Olympic Skate after her mother died. The voting and decision for the Men’s National team was done through online polls.
The award marked the second consecutive year that the team won an ESPY award. At the 2009 EPSY Awards, they won “Best Upset” for their 2-0 defeat over Spain in the semifinals of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Landon Donovan also received two other awards. He won the Castrol Performance Under Pressure award for his goal against Algeria, and his 3rd ESPY for Best MLS Player.
