2010 World Cup: USA vs Algeria Review

USA was coming into this game with a simple goal: to win. In order to make it to the next round, USA needed to beat Algeria plain and simple. Yes the chance that England and Slovenia would end in a tie would be in favor for the United States. However, USA was playing with the soul intention of winning, no matter what happened in the England vs Slovenia game.

Within the first few minutes, Algeria shot a ball off the crossbar. That was a definite wake up call for USA. After that, the majority of the game was all United States. And it wouldn’t be a United States game without a controversial offside call. Clint Dempsey received a ball across the goal mouth and put it in only to have it called back for offside. Looking at the replay, there was no offside.

That goal was called back but boy did USA have opportunities to score. With chances that Altidore, Dempsey, and others had, the score could have easily been 5-0. But they could not buy a goal until the 91st minute. Tim Howard makes a save and quickly sends the ball up to Landon Donovan. Landon makes a pass thru to Jozy Altidore who passes across to Clint Dempsey. Dempsey tries to poke it by the keeper, but he blocks the shot. The ball rolls out and Landon Donovan is there to blast it home! It goes down as the latest goal scored in World Cup history!

Speaking of history, this is the first time since 1930 that USA has won their bracket. The United States will be playing against Ghana in the round of 16. England will be playing against Germany. How fun would it be to see USA and England once again?! Maybe Robert Green will get the chance to redeem himself as England’s goalkeeper? Maybe not! Go USA!
