The United Soccer League’s (USL) team, the Vancouver Whitecaps has been announced as one of the new Major League Soccer’s (MLS) expansion teams. The Whitecaps will join the MLS in the 2011 season, making them the 17th team in the league, as well as the 2nd Canadian team.
The Whitecaps’ home field will be in the renovated BC Place stadium. There are plans for upgrades that are estimated at $365 million, which includes a new retractable roof that will complement a soccer-specific design. They will be playing in the stadium’s lower bowl, which will seat about 20,000 fans, and a hopeful target season-ticket base of 16,500.
The Whitecaps also have future plans to build a soccer-specific stadium on the Vancouver waterfront, but probably will not happen for a few years, since they already have a five-year lease at BC Place.
