2018 and 2022 World Cup

Can you believe the planning for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup is already in the works? February 2nd is the final date for potential hosts to register to be considered. Each country has until March 16 to submit a bid on one tournament or both, and then they have until December 2009 to submit detailed applications in the form of a binding hosting agreement. The winners will be chosen by FIFA in December 2010.

The eligibility requirement is for the host to have at least 12 stadiums that holds at least 40,000 fans for all matches and one stadium that holds at least 80,000 for the opening and final match.

Some countries that have been confirmed in the bidding for 2018 are Australia, England, Qatar and Russia, as well as joint bids by Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg as well as Spain and Portugal. The USA, China, Japan, Mexico and Canada are also likely to join.

After the 2006 World Cup, FIFA created a new policy to determine future hosts. The six international soccer organizations will now rotate in their turn of being eligible to bid for future World Cups. So far this system has only been used for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

With South Africa hosting in 2010, African countries are eligible for 2022 only. Because Brazil is hosting the 2014 World Cup, no South American country can apply for either event. Depending upon who is chosen for 2018, that region will be excluded from consideration for 2022.

So who do you think will host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup?
