Soccer, a Reality TV Show?

That’s right! The new Major League Soccer (MLS) team, the Seattle Sounders, which begins play in the MLS next season, will be holding open tryouts, which they will turn into a reality TV show! It’ll be a great way for soccer fans to help choose a player for the new team.

The Sounders will conduct their open tryouts in three Washington cities in November, which will be filmed for a new reality television series. The tryouts will be three hours each and aired starting in January of 2009. Viewers will be able to participate by choosing nine finalists.

The finalists will then have an additional televised one hour tryout in Seattle, which will be aired on February 1, 2009 after the Super Bowl on NBC. During the final tryout a group of judges will determine the winner, which will be awarded a spot on the 2009 Sounders team.

Yea, at first I thought that too… But just think what kind of publicity US Soccer and the MLS will get! Viewers will be able to help choose a player, even if he doesn’t play, I’m sure there’ll be lots of attention surrounding him which will help promote soccer. The only reason half the US even know who Beckham is, is because of the movie Bend it Like Beckham! And once Beckham joined the MLS, ticket sales rose at each stadium, cause people came just to see him! I have a feeling something similar will happen with the guy who wins this spot on the Sounders. I think it’ll help out the MLS a lot!

I think this, like any other reality TV show, is simply mocking the sport of soccer. I think its great that they would do something for the public like holding open tryouts but to make the choice up to the people is stupid, in my opinion.
