The controversial hand ball…again

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of the very controversial way that France has advanced to the 2010 World Cup, beating Ireland 2-1 on aggregate with Thierry Henry’s hand ball. We all know Maradona went down in history with his.

Watching the replay, it’s pretty clear that he intentionally moved his hand out to keep the ball in play and was able to cross it, which lead to the goal being scored.
Thierry Henry has confessed to the ordeal, even stating he may retire from the game, but at the time he looked pretty content with the no call. FIFA ignored Ireland’s pleas for a rematch, but with all the attention it’s getting maybe they’ll do something else? Possibly suspend Henry?

I can’t believe he’s thinking about retiring over it!

According to the FIFA rules, I think the result stands no matter what. There is no precedent to suspend an entire team so I think its a lock that France will be going to the Cup. I think Henry should be suspended from international play. I wouldn’t be truly opposed to a ban but I don’t think thats a reasonable request. Sadly, in the end, Ireland gets the short end of the stick.
