2010 World Cup: USA vs England Review

USA probably didn’t plan to be one goal down within 5 minutes of the first half. Steven Gerrard found himself unmarked and found the back of the net giving England a quick lead in the game. I think USA woke up after that in terms of defense. However, offensively there was not much being generated. Thankfully, England’s goalkeeper, Robert Green, helped change that.

USA’s Clint Dempsey worked hard to get away from his defender and took a half decent shot at net. With what seemed to be a routine save for top professional goalkeepers, Robert Green bent down, put his body behind the ball and….oh no. The ball hit the side of his hand and ended up rolling across the goal line. I would not want to be this guy going into the locker room at half time never mind showing your face in public in England.

The only other chance USA really had at scoring and actually taking the lead was with Jozy Altidore in the second half. He worked hard to get to the ball, beat his defender, and got into the penalty box and took a shot. Unfortunately, he didn’t fully kick the ball. It still went toward the net and Robert Green redeemed himself by making the save. England had a few chances of their own but could not find the back of the net.

Coming away with a point is a good start for the USA. However, the next two games will not be easy. They face Slovenia on June 18 and Algeria on June 23.
