What is the MLS Wooden Spoon Award?

The Wooden Spoon Award is an unofficial annual award given to the Major League Soccer (MLS) team with the worst regular season record, as determined by the MLS. It originates from the Australian Football League Wooden Spoon.

Because the MLS does not have divisions where teams can move up or down, U.S soccer fans wanted a way to create interests for the weaker teams that scored the least points in the regular season. 2008 marks the first season that the award is officially given, but it has also been retroactively given to former last place teams.
