Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPS)

The women are back but with a different name! The new Women’s Professional Soccer League (WPS) will have its inaugural game on Sunday, March 29, 2009, when the Washington Freedom take on the Los Angeles Sol at Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

The WPS is the replacement of the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA), making it the highest level of women’s professional soccer in the U.S. The opening game will be covered live on the Fox Soccer Channel beginning at 6pm Eastern/3pm Pacific.

Seven teams have signed up for the initial 2009 season, the Boston Breakers, and Washington Freedom, which both came from the WUSA, the Los Angeles Sol, Chicago Red Stars, FC Gold Pride (Bay Area, CA), St. Louis Athletica, and Sky BlueFC (NY/NJ). 2010 expansion to Atlanta, Philadelphia and Dallas is already in the works.

The rest of the 2009 schedule will be announced soon. So keep your eye open and watch out for the WPS!
