WPS Inaugural Game
March 28, 2009 | Halftime Report | Add a comment
The new Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) League will have its inaugural match on Sunday, March 29 at 6PM EST at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA when the Los Angeles Sol take on the Washington Freedom. The game will be broadcasted on the Fox Soccer Channel (FSC).
For the 2009 season, the WPS league will be made up of a single table, as there are seven teams, and there will be a unique playoff format. The first-place team at the end of the 20-game regular season will receive a bye directly to the championship game. The number 4 seed will play at the 3rd seed, with the winner facing the 2nd seed. That winner will then go on to the championship, which will be held in late August and hosted by the top seed.
The WPS will soon be announcing information on their expansion teams. With Philadelphia becoming the league’s eighth team, starting next season and Atlanta expected to join as the ninth team in 2010

I absolutely disagree with the playoff format for this. It’s rather asinine. Many teams would rather play than have that long of a bye.
